Monitor Viewing Photos.
How Much Resolution to Scan?

  • For scanning a 4 x 5 picture to send by e-mail, I recommend resolution of 75 dpi and resizing the image to 300 pixels across the top. This will give you a file size of around 24KB. A good small size to send over to internet
    .
  • For viewing on your monitor, I recommend resolution of 75 dpi and no resizing

For Printing Photos .How Much Resolution to Scan?

  • Printer "dpi" is a different thing from image dpi (except in Line art mode).
  • For inkjet or laser printers, here are good scaling guidelines for Color or Gray Scale photographs:
  • 300 or 360 dpi printer - use 60 to 120 dpi image.
  • 600 or 720 dpi printer - use 120 to 240 dpi image.

The Scanning Procedure for Photos

  • Open graphic program that you want to scan into
  • Go to file > Import > Twain > Acquire
  • On the scanning window that pops up, set the perimeters
  • Type of scan. COLOR
  • Resolution. 75 dpi
  • Run Preview
  • Adjust the crop lines
  • Run Scan

Color Adjustment for photos.Using Paint Shop Pro

  • After the scan, you have a graphic images. Click off the scan window and go to Color > Adjust > Gamma Correction.
  • Put check in link and make value 1.20
  • Next > Color >Adjust Hue/Saturation/Lightness
  • Values should be: Hue 100% Saturation 10% Lightness 30%
  • Next > Image > Sharpen > Unsharp Mask
  • Values should be: Radius 1.00, Strength 50% Clipping 1
  • That does it

Saving

  • For windows 95, make a folder on your deck top and call it My Pictures
  • Windows 98 comes with My Pictures folder. It is under My Documents.
  • Click the save button , scroll to MY Pictures folder, give the picture a name,and choose JPEG as a file type
  • Click OK
  • You can also save your pictures to a floppy disc or your zip drive. This saves space on your hard drive.
  • In explorer ( where your files are ) select your picture > Menu > Copy.
  • Select you’re A drive and from the Menu hit Paste

Scanning an article.How much resolution ?

  • The Bottom line is 300 dpi
  • Here you need more resolution to have the text recognized when you run OCR
  • OCR stands for Optical Character Resolution

Scanning Procedure for an Article

  • For this scan we will use HP Precision Scan that came with the HP Scanner
    .Open HP Precision Scan.
  • Click get a new scan.
  • Click output Type and choose Text.
  • Choose scan to go to Word pad.
  • Click send scan now button.

OCR Output

  • The output of the article is in text form and in Word Pad.
  • Save the File with a name in MY Documents.
  • The recognition is not perfect. You will have to hand correct the results.
  • *Most scanners come with a lite ( LE ) OCR program and you will need to buy an extra high powered OCR Program to scan a magazine article with pictures and columns. I use Textbridge 9.0 ($79 ). OmniPage is another good one.
