HTML Tutorial To Make a Personal Web Page.

This Tutorial gets you started creating a personal web pages that other Internet users can access and visit. It's a great way to share information about yourself, tell people about your interests and hobbies, share photos, provide a list of your favorite Web sites, and much more.

Procedure for making 3 website pages using Nvu (pronounced New View).

Nvu is a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) web editor based on the built-in Mozilla Composer web editor that comes with the Mozilla Suite. It has far more features than the Mozilla Composer. NVU Editor and can be Downloaded from Nuv website

To start you need to have a folder to save your files to. Under My Documents make a folder called My HTML. In this folder make another folder called images. In the image folder put in a header image, 3 nav buttons images, and 4 pictures images. These images were made and edited in Paint Shop Pro. Below are the images used for this tutorial. You can use these images, for this procedure by right clicking on them and saving to your image folder that resides in you My HTML folder.

With Nvu up and running, create a new page .

  • Click the New button in Nvu's toolbar.

  • Save Page as index.html in My HTML folder.The first page of a website is always called index.html. Alway save new pages first. If you do not save the page now all the images well not show on the Internet.
  • Next go to Fromat and chosse Page Title and Peoperties. Fill out the form.
  • Next go to Fromat and chosse Page Colors and Background. Fill out the form.
  • Center the curser and hit the image button

  • Choose header image. Add the alternate text such as Header and save .

  • Center the curser below the header, add the 3 nav buttons adding alt text, and save.

  • Copy this page by using save as 2 times.

  • Save 1 page as pictures.html and save the other page as contact.html.

  • Select the tab for the index.html.

  • select the Home button and select the link button .

  • Choose the index.html file.

  • Do the same for the picture and the contact buttons.

  • Select the header image and all 3 buttons holding down the shift key and hit copy.

  • Open picture.html and hit the paste button.

  • Do same for contact.html.

  • Select the index file and add you text. Save.

  • Select the picture.html and put your curser centered below to nav bar.

  • Type in Pictures.

  • Select the table button and choose precisely button.

  • Choose 2 rows, 2 columns, width = 600 and border = 0.

  • Put your curser in the top left cell and hit the image button to add a picture. Add the alt text name for the picture in the form.

  • Add the pictures to the other cells the same way.

  • Select the contact page tab and put your curser centered below the nav bar.

  • You can add you name, address and your e-mail address or just your e-mail address here

  • To add your e-mail address, choose the link button, type in you e-mail address in the link location box, and check the box for e-mail.

  • That it. You have learned to add images, text, a table, an e-mail address, and make links. Now you can view you page in your browser. With the index page tab up hit the browser button . Try out you links to the other pages. All OK?

  • To publish your pages to the Internet, You will need to sign up for hosting.

  • Here is a FREE web hosting that has FTP uploading.

  • Here is a hosting service that charges $4.95/month and gives you a free domain name.      http://www.ixwebhosting.com/

  • I use http://www.powweb.com for my personal web site and also for the DBCC site.
  • When you sign up for hosting service they send you by e-mail Your FTP (File Transfer Protocol) For      example see below.

  • Host name and address like : ftp.powweb.com

  • Your user ID: wlbro

  • Your password: 0W5zk4L

  • Your remote sit folder: htdoc.

  • Select the Publish button and add your FTP information in the form.

    Settings
    When you Publish (uploading to server), your page file and the page images files are uploaded. This is a plus. For most FTP programs you have to upload each file one at a time. If you can't access your page, click on the Help > Help Content > choose Publishing Your Webpage. .
  • You might consider getting server space from you internet provider like: www.concast.net, www.aol.com or www.bellsouth.net . Yahoo has free server space at www.geocities.com . This is where I started out with my first website 10 years ago. It was free!!

    DBCC has agreed to host your personal website on the club's server.
