HOW TO INSTALL AND RUN AVG 7.0 ANTI-VIRUS FREE EDITION

NOTE: UNINSTALL ANY OTHER ANTI-VIRUS PROGRAM. YOU DO NOT NEED TO UNINSTALL AVG 6.0. TO PERFORM THE STEPS IN THIS TUTORIAL, YOU MUST BE CONNECTED TO THE INTERNET.

PRINT OUT THIS TUTORIAL AND FOLLOW IT AS YOU PERFORM EACH STEP.

1. In the address bar of your browser type www.grisoft.com to open the company web site.
2. In the shaded gray box on the left side of the page, click on the bottom entry, AVG Free Edition. This will take you to the AVG Free Edition web page.
3. Under the red banner stating NEW AVG ANTI-VIRUS FREE EDITION NOW AVAILABLE, click on the underlined hyperlink called Download the New AVG Free Edition Now.
4. Scroll toward the bottom of the page where you see the orange ruled box below with the name AVG Free Edition Installation Files. The file name is subject to change any time. For the purposes of this tutorial, you would click on the file name hyperlink( avg70free 289a392.exe) as shown in the example below:
5. When you click on the above hyperlink, a Save or File Security Box will appear. Click on the Save Box.
6. In the Save As box that opens, click the down arrow next to the Save In option and select Desktop as the location as shown below. This will make the downloaded file easy to find.
7. Click the gray Save button in the lower right hand corner which will download the file your desktop. Close the box after the download is finished. Remember that downloading a file only places it on your computer. You must click on it to run it and install the application or program.
8. Click the checkerboard icon named avg70free_289a392.exe on your desktop to run the file and begin the installation procedure. If you see a box pop up, select the Run or Open option which will install the program.
9. When the Welcome box appears click Next.
10. When the next two boxes concerning the License Agreement appear, click the Accept box on each one. After you do this the system status monitor will run and check to see if your computer meets the minimum installation requirements, If it does, the program will continue to run and install. It will notify you that it will uninstall the previous version of AVG if one exists, and install the new version in its place automatically.
11. POWER OFF YOUR COMPUTER, WAIT 30 SECONDS, THEN RESTART IT. This will ensure a proper installation.
12. If the installation was successful, your desktop will have two identical checkerboard type icons: one on the desktop and another in the lower right hand corner.
13. The easiest way to open AVG is to double-click on the checkerboard icon on the desktop..Click on the Check for Updates button or press the F9 key on your keyboard to get the gray shaded box shown below:
14. Click on the from Internet button (check the box so the computer knows that you are always going to update AVG with your current Internet connection). The next time you check for updates, the computer will skip that area and scan for updates automatically.
15. If a Priority update is found, AVG will let you know, and then all you do is click OK.Wait for the countdown to complete then click OK. If you see a message stating that no update file is available at the moment, AVG is telling you that the virus database is already updated so you can close the box.
16. After updating is complete, do a complete scan of the computer. Click on the large gray Scan Computer button to begin the scan.
17. If no viruses are found on your computer, AVG will tell you so and you can close the program.
18. If a virus is found and you use Windows ME or XP, you MUST disable the System Restore function to prevent your computer from being infected again after you have cleaned it. Skip to Step #22 if your operating system is Windows XP.
19. If your operating system is Windows ME, open the Control Panel and double-click on the System Icon. If the System icon is not visible, click "View all Control Panel options" to display it. On the Performance tab, click File System. Click the Troubleshooting tab, and then check Disable System Restore box on the bottom. Click OK. Click Yes when you are prompted to restart Windows. Rescan the computer for viruses. If no viruses are found reverse the procedure. To do this, uncheck the box you checked in this step.
20. If you use Windows XP, right-click on My Computer and select Properties. Click on the System Restore tab and check the box Turn off System Restore. Click OK. Restart the computer and rescan it for viruses. If no viruses are found, turn System Restore on again by reversing the procedure. To do this, uncheck the box you checked in this step.
NOTE:To prevent viruses from reinfecting a cleaned computer at any point, all current and previous system restore points on your computer are removed when System Restore is turned off. After you have cleaned your computer and turned System Restore back on, it's a good idea to check and see if you need to reinstall any Windows updates. Better safe than sorry, right?
